NEWS FROM YOUR UNION

• Congratulations to Deborah Ellis and Paul Beavers who will be continuing on as Vice President and Treasurer of AAUP-AFT! Make sure to cast your vote by May 15 in the run-off election between Simone Brennan and Angela Tiura for Member-at-Large. Search your inbox for an email from ballot@ballotsonline.com.

• The amended union bylaws passed, which will mean a number of adjustments for the union in the coming months. This fall, we’ll be holding a special election for two Member-at-Large seats. The updated bylaws can be read here.

• Elections for the Lecturer Steering Committee (LSC) and the Academic Staff Steering Committee (ASSC) will take place soon. LSC will be expanding to include all non-tenure track faculty. If you’re NTTF or Academic Staff, consider running for the leadership team in one of these groups.

• We are looking for eight Organizing Fellows to learn how to talk to people about joining the union. It is fun, and an opportunity to meet amazing people all over campus. There is a $2,500 stipend associated with this work. E-mail Mark Dilley (mdilley@aaupaft.org) for more info. The deadline for submitting an application is May 27.

• We would like to send union members to the 2022 Labor Notes Conference in Chicago, June 17–19. The Labor Notes Conference is the biggest gathering out there of grassroots union activists, worker center leaders, and all-around troublemakers. We expect to be able to cover the conference fee, train fare, hotel, and a meal allowance for up to 10 AAUP-AFT members. If you’d like to go, or need more information, email office@aaupaft.org.

• Reminder that if you have not yet applied for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) you absolutely should. Two more Wayne State faculty members have reported that all their student loans have been forgiven thanks to PSLF. UNION ACTIVISM

• Several members have been connecting with the Reproductive Rights Group of Michigan to protect Roe v. Wade. In March, we were part of a coalition of groups that co-sponsored a reproductive rights event on campus. The next march for reproductive rights in Detroit is this Saturday, May 14 at 1 pm leaving from the Theodore Levin Courthouse. More info on Saturday’s march can be found here. If you’d like to serve as a union representative to this new group’s meetings, please get in touch with daubert@aaupaft.org so we can coordinate.

• Yesterday, in coordination with other unions around the country, we sent an email to President Biden on behalf of our union requesting that he use executive action to end the student debt crisis. Read the letter here. If you’re interested in learning more about the movement to cancel student debt, join a strategy session with the Debt Collective on May 17.

• Last month union members collected many bags of clothing and boxes of canned goods and supplies for the W pantry. Academic Staff Steering Committee members Mershawn Gayden, Maya Calloway Richardson, Deb Gibson, and Paul Bishop stopped by the W Food Pantry and Wardrobe to drop off personal care packets and money they raised to support Wayne State students in need of food and clothing assistance.

ON CAMPUS

• WSU-GEARS asks that you complete their survey on hidden workload, faculty work experiences, and work/family/life issues at Wayne State University. The survey will close May 13. The purpose of this effort is to inform and assist in the adaptation and development of university resources regarding recruitment, retention, and promotion that are critical to our success as an institution. Two union social events next week!

1) Tuesday, April 26, 3-5 pm, join the Lecturers Steering Committee (LSC) for Study Break on Gullen Mall. There will be yoga, music, bocce ball, and cornhole games. Bring your own blanket and lawn chair. RSVP here.

2) Thursday, April 28, 4–7 pm, come to Tony V’s Tavern on Cass Ave for an end of semester AAUP-AFT pizza party. All AAUP-AFT academic staff and faculty are welcome. Come, and bring your colleagues! RSVP to office@aaupaft.org so we can get a headcount for food.

Donations for The W Food & Wardrobe

Our union is collecting donations to support The W Food & Wardrobe, which provides currently enrolled Wayne State students with supplemental food, gently used garments and additional resources they may need. A list of most needed items can be found here. Until Wednesday, April 20, drop off donations in Old Main in the Department of Music Main Office (1321 Old Main) or in the College of Education building on the fourth floor across from the elevators. Donations will also be collected at the LSC social study day on Gullen Mall on 4/26, and at the end of semester pizza party at Tony V’s on 4/28. In addition, our union has donated $1,000 directly to The W Food & Wardrobe.

Family Leave, Tenure Clock Extensions, and More

We would like to remind faculty across campus that you can discuss your options regarding family leave, caregiver support, tenure clock extensions, and other aspects of managing work/family/life circumstances with WSU GEARS FANs Faculty Family Advisors. These are faculty members in different colleges on campus who are trained to advise on these issues. They can offer advice as peers. More details can be found here.

Great Lakes Coffee Workers on Strike

The 20 workers at Great Lakes Coffee have been out on strike for weeks. Consider donating to their strike fund, and do not buy Great Lakes Coffee beans until their union is recognized. The baristas and cooks at Great Lakes worked throughout the pandemic and are now demanding PPE like masks, clear COVID protocols, a starting wage of at least $15 per hour and fair tip distribution, and anti-harassment and anti-discrimination protections. They’re seeking to join UNITE HERE Local 24, which represents several janitors at Wayne State. These workers are a part of the extended Wayne State union family via our Coalition of Unions. Indiana University Graduate Workers on Strike

Our union has endorsed the Graduate Workers (IGWC-UE) at Indiana University who are facing incredible push back in working to organize at IU-Bloomington. Despite submitting nearly 1600 union cards asking for an election, their request was denied. Please support these incredibly hard-working students by contributing to their strike fund and following them on social media @IndianaGrads.

09/13/21: Tentative Agreement for Collective Bargaining Agreement

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of your Bargaining Team, I am pleased to announce that we have pending Tentative Agreements (TAs) on the final articles of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) at the negotiations session this evening. The work across the table combined with the engagement and support of our members has led us to the type of fair and equitable compensation and healthcare provisions to complete negotiations for a strong renewal of our CBA after eight years and eight long months at the table.

Once the TAs are fully executed tomorrow morning, you’ll receive more communication about the coming week as we move toward the ratification vote of our members for the CBA. Please stay tuned in the coming days as there will be several announcements of critical importance related to the ratification information sessions and process.

2021 ASSC Election Results

Following are the names of the newly-elected Officers of the Academic Staff Steering Committee:

The new Officers will assume their roles on July 1, 2021. At that time, Paul Bishop will be the new Chair of the ASSC in accordance with the By-Laws.

ASSC Election -- Nomination Period Deadline Extended to Friday, 5/28/21

We have decided to extend the Academic Staff Steering Committee (ASSC) nomination period deadline from Friday, 5.21.21 to Friday, 5/28/21.

Also, the election period has changed slightly, and will now run from 7:00 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2021, through midnight on Sunday, June 27, 2021.

Nominations are still needed for some of the ASSC leadership positions. We have received two (2) nominations for Co-Chair, one (1) nomination for Secretary, but have not received any nominations for the two (2) Member-at-Large positions. 08/20/20 WSU Finances Revealed

The Administration has been proclaiming a dire financial situation for the University. President Roy Wilson has been trying to convince the 14 Unions representing the faculty, academic staff and other employees to make concessions through wage cuts, layoffs and furloughs.

Your Union, AAUP-AFT Local 6075, contracted with an independent accounting expert on higher education finances to review the audited financial statements of WSU from 2014-2019 and other documents, and provide an evaluation of the University’s finances. We have received a 117 slide PowerPoint presentation that we will shortly make public.

On Thursday, August 27, from 4.00 pm - 5.00 pm, we will have a Zoom meeting to present some of the key findings from this comprehensive report.

We will show that WSU is in a strong current financial state, and we will present solutions to potential shortfalls that do not punish faculty, academic staff and other represented employees who have already made considerable sacrifices.

The report on Channel 2 brings a different perspective on the constant bragging of the Administration about raising the 6-year Black graduation rate from 6% to 21%. See the video at:

The number of actual Black graduates fell over the past eight years, from 527 to 473. The percentage was raised by lowering the number of Black students at WSU. 

Every Black Wayne State graduate should be celebrated, but we need to do better in discharging the University's responsibility to the City where we live. President Wilson, on camera, blames the Detroit School System and social factors for the low absolute number of Black graduates, factors beyond the University's control. The question is what can we do to raise the number of Black graduates given these conditions? We cannot do this by continuing to deny more and more Black students the opportunity to enter the University. We now have a lower percentage of Black undergraduates than Eastern Michigan University.

07/30/22 Message regarding the SOM Clinical Faculty

Message to Members on Clinical Faculty in the School of Medicine

On July 27th the Union sent a letter to the Administration that demanded to bargain the remarkable change in a personnel policy that had been followed for decades in the School of Medicine. The first concrete steps in implementing this new policy were taken today when letters of termination were sent to all members of our clinical faculty in the School of Medicine.

We understand that the next step will be to offer them a contract renewal that is not based on their present contracts, but will treat them as new hires who will be appointed at a half-time position at a severely lower salary base. The difference in salary is proposed to be made up for the monetary losses involved by the WSUPG, the principal faculty practice plan. This is contrary to past policies and will be destructive to the goals of the School of Medicine.

Further, it will constitute a subsidy to the WSUPG, the principal faculty practice plan. By keeping the appointment at .5 full-time equivalent, the faculty will continue to be covered at the same cost by the University health benefits program so that the WSUPG does not have to offer a similar benefit.

The Schweitzer proposal will not make up the 10% retirement salary match that faculty members presently receive from the University on their higher salary level. The base for the retirement match, given the much lower salary being offered, will also be much lower than it is under the present contract.

The Administration has responded to our letter demanding to bargain the policy changes we cited in our July 27th letter and has agreed to schedule talks with the Union. They also argue that there has been no change in personnel policy and that they have the power to proceed as they are now. We will meet with their bargaining representatives and keep you informed of the negotiations as they progress. We still have two months between now and the September 30th termination date. Let us hope that the Administration will be reasonable and we can come to a satisfactory resolution of this unfortunate situation.
