Union Rounds

Union Rounds is the new one page publication from AAUP-AFT Local 6075.

The idea is for Union Rounds to provide members with relevant news and information more frequently. As rounds happen around the campus, updates with news from the Wayne State community will be written.

Academeblog: The Future of Friedrichs in the Supreme Court

"There’s been much speculation about the impact of the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on the cases currently before the Court, particularly those anticipated to be decided by a 5-4 vote with Scalia in the majority. One of these cases is Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, in which the plaintiffs argued that the Supreme Court’s 40 year precedent upholding the constitutionality of agency fees – or fair share fees – should be overruled. The full Court heard oral arguments in the case last month. The AAUP had filed an amicus brief in Friedrichs, with the American Federation of Teachers, arguing that the Court should re-affirm that the payment of agency fees by nonmembers to support their fair share of the costs of collective bargaining is constitutional."

Michigan article: Universities want more money - Snyder wants more innovation.

"With college costs rising and Michigan near the bottom nationally in higher education funding, the state is at a crossroads. The divide over how to fix the problem was epitomized by competing remarks Monday by state political and education leaders at a Lansing education conference.
Speaking first, Gov. Rick Snyder acknowledged that state funding is important, but urged more innovative solutions to help students earn a degree they can afford. The governor’s call for innovation was countered presidents of some of the state’s largest universities, who contend that after years of university belt-tightening, the state needs to ramp up spending to help make college more affordable."

AAUP.org: Journal of Academic Freedom Vol. 6

"Volume six of the AAUP Journal of Academic Freedom - of its sixteen essays, eight discuss the case of Steven Salaita. This case became the center of a heated public debate after the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, responding to controversial remarks Salaita made on Twitter, rescinded the offer it had made him of a tenured appointment."
