January 2022: Overview of the School of Medicine

Recently proposed salary cuts to tenured faculty in the School of Medicine follow a troubling pattern where faculty and academic staff have less and less agency, and the Dean has more and more authority over salaries. In 2020, the Dean made drastic cuts to clinical faculty salaries and benefits. A number of departures of Chairs and Vice Deans from the Wayne State School of Medicine have raised concern.

Faculty and academic staff in the School of Medicine: please complete the survey emailed to you by AAAelections before January 26, 2022. Email office@aaupaft.org if you cannot find the email.

Take action to protect your job security and support our bargaining team

The Contract Negotiations Action Team asks you to sign a petition to tell the WSU administration that you support job security for all bargaining unit members. The administration is resisting extending job security to some members of our bargaining unit (lecturers, researchers and clinical faculty) and proposing to erode the tenure protections guaranteed to tenured and tenure-track faculty under our current contract. We have already taken collective action to protest the mass “non-renewals” of lecturers in several campus units, and we need to take action again to protect all faculty and academic staff members moving forward. If you haven’t done so already, watch the moving video from the Lecturer’s Steering Committee to learn how disruptive non-renewals are to the lives and livelihoods of our colleagues who primarily serve as teaching faculty, as well as to the students and departments who rely on them.

Sign the petition today to tell the administration that we will not accept attacks on tenure or ESS and we will fight for guaranteed job security for lecturers and clinical and research faculty. Once a majority (51%) of our membership has signed the petition, we will make the signatories public and deliver the petition to the administration.

We believe an injury to one is an injury to all, and we will not make trade-offs on fundamental job protections. Security in Solidarity!
