Statement on Communication
February 6, 2020
Union members raised questions regarding the December 17, 2019 distribution of a
member’s concern intended for the Executive Board to the full membership list. The
AAUP-AFT Council offers the following statement in response.
The role of the AAUP-AFT Council is outlined in Article IX of the AAUP-AFT Bylaws.
Duties of the Council include:
Representatives to relay information to and from Union leadership, and Council
Representatives serve as a central point of contact for member questions and concerns.
Ensuring trust between Council Representatives and those they represent is paramount.
To every extent possible, requests for confidentiality and anonymity will by respected by
the Union leadership.
As we move into bargaining season, it is important that members feel confident that they
may contact their Council Representatives under any circumstances and through
whatever channel (in-person, email, etc.) they choose. As an additional vehicle for
communication, the Council requests that Executive Board members’ contact information
be easily accessible on the Union’s website.

- Making recommendations about issues facing the Union;
- Providing review and assistance during the negotiating process;
- Facilitating communication for all members.
